About the museum
The Murhard Library on Brüder-Grimm-Platz goes back to the will of the Kassel brothers Friedrich and Karl Murhard from 1845, who endowed their fortune for a scholarly civic library. The neo-Renaissance building opened in 1905 and has been shared with the State Library since 1959; since 1976 both departments have belonged to the University Library Kassel. The holdings, especially manuscripts and autographs, are of world-class importance, including the Hildebrandlied from the 9th century.
Since 2017 the building has been undergoing renovation and an extension. The annex contains a 210 m² exhibition room where the valuable historical holdings are to be displayed in protected conditions. After a partial opening in November 2024, the library opens on October 24, 2026, with an Open Library Day in a new format.
The exhibition "Schätze aus Pergament und Papier" presents the house's most precious pieces for the first time since 2012, including medieval manuscripts and an original copy of the Paulskirchenverfassung.
