About the museum

The Günter Grass-Haus in Lübeck's old town opened in October 2002. It comprises two restored historic townhouses on Glockengießerstraße with a long garden that extends to the neighboring Willy Brandt-Haus. Günter Grass, who lived in nearby Behlendorf from 1986, kept his office and archive here from the 1990s and was a regular presence in the house until his death in 2015.

The museum belongs to the Lübecker Museen of the Kulturstiftung Hansestadt Lübeck and sees itself as a forum for literature and the visual arts. At its heart is Grass's dual talent as an author and visual artist: the collection comprises well over a thousand drawings, etchings, lithographs and watercolors as well as manuscripts; it was fully digitized in 2016.

In 2022 the permanent exhibition was redesigned. It combines a re-created grocery store from the world of “The Tin Drum” with an open archive, media stations, original prints and a sculpture garden. Temporary exhibitions are devoted to artists who, like Grass, worked in several disciplines, from Goethe and Hesse to Janosch and Cornelia Funke.

In view of Günter Grass's 100th birthday in 2027, the museum received federal funding to preserve and present his estate.
