About the museum
The Hagnauer Museum is housed in the former stewardship building of Weingarten Abbey, which today serves as the town hall of the municipality of Hagnau. It is run by the Heimat- und Geschichtsverein Hagnau (local history society), whose volunteers design the exhibitions and organize events. In 2007 the museum received an award as an exemplary local history museum.
The permanent exhibition is divided by theme across several rooms on the first floor. It ranges from Stone Age and Bronze Age finds from the Hagnau pile-dwelling settlement and historical administrative ledgers to the Seegfrörnen of 1830, 1880, and 1963, when Lake Constance froze over and the traditional ice procession between Hagnau and Münsterlingen took place. A separate section is devoted to the priest, politician, and popular writer Heinrich Hansjakob, who founded the Winzerverein (winegrowers’ cooperative) in 1881, and thus also to the history of winegrowing in the village.
Another focus is on artists who came from Hagnau or lived there: replicas of works by the Cologne painter Stefan Lochner, who was probably born in Hagnau, paintings by the Zimmermann family of painters, and works by Julius Bissier and the hand weaver Lisbeth Bissier, who lived in the village from 1939 to 1961. Each season the museum also presents a changing exhibition on art or local history.
