About the museum
Hermann Wilhelm founded the Haidhausen Museum in spring 1977 as a neighbourhood museum for one of Munich's oldest districts; Haidhausen was already mentioned in documents in 808. He still runs the museum privately today, supported by the Department of Arts and Culture of the City of Munich.
The listed three-storey building on Kirchenstraße was built in 1862 in the neoclassical style and stands in the oldest part of the settlement, between the old and new parish churches of St. Johann Baptist and the Haidhausen cemetery. From 1985, the children's cinema “KiM – Kino im Museum” showed films here until it moved to the Einstein cultural centre in 1998.
There is no permanent exhibition: in two exhibition rooms on the ground floor and in the basement, several shows each year on everyday life, history and personalities of the district take turns – for example on the Auer Dult, the Ludwigsbrücke, the post-war period, or vanished shops and businesses. Accompanying books are published for many of the exhibitions.
