Printed Advent calendars made of paper and cardboard, from the early 20th century onwards, are on show, including 3D house-shaped calendars, Advent clocks and Scandinavian calendars, drawn from a private collection.
About the museum
Wernigerode's first museum, the “Fürst-Otto-Museum”, opened in 1897 and was closely tied to the possessions of the princely house. When the latter fell into financial difficulty, the history and museum society secured the collection as a local history museum, which was housed from 1931 to 1945 in the tenant's residence of the Vorwerk and reopened in 1946. Later the holdings were moved to the castle, with some losses.
Since 1955 the museum has been on the upper floor of Klint 10, a residential building erected in 1821 directly behind the town hall, which served municipal authorities from 1918. After extensive renovation it reopened in May 2001 with a new permanent exhibition.
On around 300 square metres in 16 rooms, the tour leads from fossils, minerals and mining through the flora and fauna of the Harz to the history of Wernigerode: half-timbered building, crafts, industrialisation, tourism and the famous town hall. A separate section shows 19th-century Harz painting and works of the Wernigerode artists' colony. Since 2006, further paintings and prints have been accessible in the Schaudepot Harzkunst at Oberpfarrkirchhof 5. With the “Green Classroom” in the Bürgerpark, the museum also offers outdoor nature education.
