About the museum
The venue goes back to the bequest of journalist and special-education teacher Edith Ruß (1919–1993), who left her fortune to the City of Oldenburg for an art center. Supplemented by funds from the estate of Elisabeth Brand, it opened in 2000 as the Edith-Russ-Haus für Medienkunst. The new building on Katharinenstraße draws formally on modernism and includes guest apartments for fellows in addition to exhibition spaces.
The venue is run by the City of Oldenburg and presents changing exhibitions of contemporary international media art, accompanied by artist talks, workshops, and education programs. Every year it supports new artistic projects through fellowships. It was directed in turn by Rosanne Altstatt, Sabine Himmelsbach, and Claudia Giannetti; since 2015, Edit Molnár and Marcel Schwierin have shared the directorship.
After research in 2024 revealed the Nazi Party memberships and Nazi-era activities of the two benefactors, the city council decided in February 2025 to rename it Haus für Medienkunst Oldenburg. For individual projects, the venue also uses the historic Pulverturm (powder tower) on the Schlosswall.
