About the museum
Horst Janssen (1929–1995), one of the most important German draftsmen and printmakers of the 20th century, spent his childhood in Oldenburg. The foundation for a museum was laid in 1995 by the Oldenburg entrepreneur Claus Hüppe, who acquired the Janssen collection of Carin and Carl Vogel, comprising around 1,800 sheets, and thereby made the museum building possible to a large extent.
The Horst-Janssen-Museum opened in 2000 in a new building designed by the architects Peter Reinig, Meike Dreyer and Carl Deters, closely linked both physically and organizationally with the neighboring Stadtmuseum Oldenburg. In 2016 another collection of just over 300 works by Janssen was acquired for the museum.
On three levels the museum presents the permanent exhibition "Horst Janssen. Neu entdeckt!" (Horst Janssen. Rediscovered!), which was redesigned as an interactive display for the museum's 20th anniversary in 2020: its focal points are his biography, printing techniques with hands-on stations, drawing and Janssen's writing, along with a regularly changing selection of works. The upper levels host special exhibitions on the art of drawing, from the classics to graphic novels and animation.
Since 2023 the building has been adorned with "Current Lines," a 50-meter-long facade drawing by Christoph Niemann that is illuminated at night. The redesign of the Stadtmuseum created a shared foyer for both museums with the Café Atrium.
