About the museum
Mining in the Richelsdorf Mountains has a centuries-old tradition in Nentershausen: the oldest charter mentioning it, which refers to twelve smelting furnaces, dates from 1460. Copper, cobalt and heavy spar were mined until operations ended in 1966.
The museum, run by a museum association, was formerly housed in Tannenberg Castle and has been in the former Old District Court building since spring 2003. Through photographs, reports and original objects, it shows mining from the 15th to the 20th century and the lives of miners and their families. On display are, among other things, a Steiger room (Steigerstube), a St. Barbara room (Barbarastube), a section on mine safety, and a large collection of miners' lamps, ranging from the pine splint (Kienspan) to the safety lamp.
There are also fossils and minerals from the region, an exhibition on forestry work, and a local history section with a historic kitchen, bedroom, shoemaker's room, loom and a classroom from 1900. Outside, there are vehicles and mine equipment from the 20th century; for groups, a ride on the mine railway is available on request. During opening hours, former miners lead visitors through the house.
