About the museum

Jewish families have lived in Schenklengsfeld since the 15th century. In the 19th century the community grew, ran its own school from 1850, owned a cemetery, and had a large synagogue built in 1883. Until 1933 it counted around 160 people in about 34 families.

The present museum building was erected by the community in 1912/13 as a residence for the teacher Jakob Grünewald. Afterwards, two more Jewish families lived there until the house passed to the municipality in 1939. After the war, expellees lived there; from 1972 it stood empty. A support association founded in 1994 saved the building, which was comprehensively renovated in the years around 1997 to 1999.

Since then it has served as a meeting place for history and culture: an exhibition room shows objects on the history and religion of Jews in the region as well as on expulsion from 1933 onward, and a seminar room with a specialist library is available for groups and research. Those who wish can combine their visit with a walk through the village and a visit to the Jewish cemetery.
