About the museum

The Heimatmuseum Baumholder is run by the Heimat- und Kulturkreis Westrich e. V. (registered association) and mainly shows 19th-century furnishings, along with documents and photos on the development of the town. One section commemorates the villages that had to give way to the military training area.

One focus is flax processing, an important side income for the region: the exhibition traces the path from flax to finished white linen in the linen cupboard. There is also a collection of cast-iron column stoves.

The historic room holds important documents on the history of the market town, such as the house book of 1759/60, which describes every house along with its farmsteads, stables and wells; the Weistum of 1570/71, a medieval record of local customary law; as well as official seals and the old municipal cash box of the treasurer (Kämmerer). A model shows the "Flecken Baumholder" (market town) as it was in 1760, and paintings of historic buildings complete the room. Admission is free; visits are arranged through the town office.
