About the museum
The idea of a Kusel local history museum goes back to the 1840s, when a family wanted to keep salvaged antiquities in the Roter Turm. A permanent collection began in 1912 with a curator commissioned for the purpose; after his early death, the holdings found only makeshift storage, and many pieces were lost in World War II. In 1956, teacher and historian Fritz Kleinschmidt reopened the museum in the former tribunal building on Landschaftsstraße.
Since January 1973, the museum has been at Marktstraße 27, the former Engel-Apotheke. The neoclassical building went up after French revolutionary troops burned the town in 1794, on the surviving ground plan, and it itself shows how Kusel residents once lived.
Across three floors, the museum today has changing exhibitions on the first floor, historic stove tiles in the stairwell, and, on the second floor, the memorial rooms for opera singer Fritz Wunderlich along with town history items such as the 1848 civic guard flag, the town church's tower clock and the old church-tower rooster. The third floor has a Biedermeier room, and a separate room commemorates Kusel's private breweries of the 19th century.
