About the museum
The Heimat- und Geschichtsverein Mömlingen was founded in 1978 and soon began collecting objects from the town that had survived. The broad "Heimatkundliche Sammlung" (local history collection) was first housed in unused rooms of the old elementary school, a building erected in 1855 from red sandstone from Mömlingen.
From September 1995, the municipality had the former boys' school renovated at a cost of about €1.5 million, and on October 4, 1997, it was handed over for its new use as the "Alte Schule" civic building. Since then, the museum has occupied the third floor and the attic, while a youth center is housed in the vaulted cellar. The collection has now been refocused on set themes.
The house is best known for its historic classroom, with furnishings and teaching materials from 1870 to 1950, and the adjoining teacher's apartment. Also on display are a home seamstress's room that was once shown at the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg, farm tools in the attic, a shoemaker's workshop, and a village forge. Since September 2017, an archaeology section titled "Langhäuser und Reiterkrieger" (Longhouses and Horse Warriors) has shown settlement history from the Stone Age to modern times.
