About the museum

The beginnings of the Loßburg local history museum go back to 1970, when the collector Horst Lapp showed his holdings in the granary of an inn; in 1974 the municipality acquired the collection. Because of damp damage the house was closed in 1987, after which new exhibition rooms were opened in the Obere Mühle at Brunnenplatz, looked after by volunteers of the Schwarzwaldverein (Black Forest association) from 1993.

After the municipal administration moved into the new town hall in 2003, the former town hall was converted into a museum. More than 6,500 working hours from helpers, businesses and citizens went into the fit-out, and the house opened in May 2005. Since its founding in October 2005 the Museumsverein Loßburg (museum association) has run the museum; the municipality owns it.

Across about 23 rooms on several floors, the house shows the change from a farming village to an industrial and tourist community: from Alemannic grave finds from Wittendorf through costumes, boundary stones and the castle of Loßburg to trades, crafts and the beginnings of the companies ARBURG and Völkle. From the start the museum was deliberately designed to be family- and child-friendly, with play corners in many rooms.
