About the museum

The Heimatmuseum Bergneustadt opened in 1984 in an Ackerbürger house (a house of a townsperson who also farmed) from the 18th century within the listed old town, whose layout goes back to the founding of the town in 1301. The operator is the Heimatverein "Feste Neustadt," whose members run the house on a volunteer basis; it also serves as the town's tourist information office.

On two floors the museum conveys life in Bergneustadt and the Oberbergisches region from roughly the middle of the 19th century: topics are town history and jurisdiction, workshops of the carpenter, wood turner, baker, blacksmith, and cobbler, Bergisch domestic culture and housework, and the geology of the region. A gallery shows paintings by the "duck painter" Alexander Koester, born in Bergneustadt in 1864; since 1991 there has also been an annex for changing exhibitions.

In the tower gallery the association presents, together with a local collector, over 100 fire helmets from more than 50 countries, the oldest from 1780. The ensemble includes a forge and a bakehouse, which are regularly in operation, the outdoor area "Unter den Linden," and an ice cellar hewn into the rock under the old town, which once cooled beer barrels and served as a shelter in the Second World War. Couples can get married in a civil ceremony in the historic wedding room. With funding from the NRW-Stiftung, the association is planning an accessible extension.
