About the museum
The Heimatmuseum Bernstadt was re-founded in 1986 and operates on behalf of the town. It is run by a volunteer museum association with about 40 members and supported by a foundation. It is housed in the Old School near the market square, behind the Protestant church; the town library is in the same building.
After a comprehensive renovation of the building, the exhibition was completely redesigned from 2017 and finished in 2019; the attic, converted into an exhibition room, was added in 2019. Across about 300 square meters in eight rooms, around 4,000 of the more than 17,000 objects in the collection are on display; the rest is kept in storage.
Themes include town history, textile production, crafts, mining, rockets and spaceflight, and house and farm life. Also on display are postcards, maps, devices, and taxidermied animals donated by residents of Bernstadt. The exhibition is being revised on an ongoing basis.
