About the museum

Founded in 1947, the Heimatverein Beuel – today the Heimat- und Geschichtsverein Beuel am Rhein (local heritage and history society) – pursued the dream of its own museum for decades. On June 7, 1986, it opened the local history museum in Beuel’s oldest surviving half-timbered house on Wagnergasse, which at the time belonged to the society’s chairman. It is considered the first city history museum in the Bonn area.

The city of Bonn later bought the half-timbered house and the neighboring 19th-century brick house, which it renovated and made available in 1989, so that the previously scattered holdings could be brought together. From 1991, volunteers re-erected a half-timbered barn from 1662 that came from Wachtberg; in 1994 a gatehouse followed, closing off the farmstead and housing the office and archive.

The exhibition tells the history of Bonn’s district on the right bank of the Rhine from early times to the municipal reorganization of 1969. Its focus is on Beuel’s traditional trades – fishing, Rhine shipping and above all laundering – along with living and working around 1900. The barn is used for changing exhibitions, concerts and festivals; behind it is an herb garden. The museum is run entirely by volunteers and charges no admission.
