About the museum
The Heimatmuseum is located in the Brackenheim district of Botenheim, in the former council and school house built in 1837. The ground floor once held school and storage rooms, the schoolmaster lived upstairs, and the mayor's offices were also located here. A fire in 1942/43 destroyed large parts of the building; during reconstruction, a council chamber and apartments were created. When Botenheim was incorporated into Brackenheim in 1971, the building lost its town hall function.
In 1986 committed citizens founded the Heimatverein Brackenheim (local heritage association), which has displayed its growing collection here since 1987. The town thoroughly renovated the house in 2003/2004 and handed it over to the association. Since then, volunteers have run the museum, welcome visitor and school groups, and organize events; in the pre-Christmas season, the front windows become an Advent calendar.
Lovingly furnished rooms show living conditions in the Zabergäu region around 1900. Workshops of a saddler, a wheelwright, a locksmith, and a shoemaker represent the crafts; farming is also shown, along with a vaulted cellar that explains the path from vine to wine using tools of the Wengerter (local winegrowers). On the second upper floor are dollhouses, doll carriages, a complete workshop for doll shoes, and a large model railway.
