About the museum
The Heimatstube of the Sudeten German Homeland Association commemorates the more than 800-year history of the Sudeten Germans in Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia. After 1945/46, 586 people from this group found a new home in Bönnigheim alone. The expellees first joined together in 1947 in a community of interest that looked after integration and housing; it was dissolved in 1967.
In 1982 the local group of the Sudeten German Homeland Association was founded with the aim of preserving the cultural heritage of the homeland and passing it on to the next generations. The local group regards the Heimatstube as the highlight of its work; it is housed on the second floor of the Kavaliersbau next to the castle, a historic building of the town.
Traditional costumes and documents illustrate expulsion and integration; the exhibition introduces the history and culture of the Sudeten Germans. From time to time the local group also organises additional exhibitions, and every year on the fourth Sunday in October it invites visitors to a folk-culture afternoon.
