About the museum
Shortly after its founding in 1954, the Fröndenberg Heimatverein set itself the goal of building a local history museum and called on the public to donate old objects. The collected pieces were first shown in temporary exhibitions and still form the core of the collection, which has grown considerably since the early 2000s.
In December 1961, on the 300th anniversary of the Stiftsgebäude, the museum opened in three refurbished rooms of this building. The 1661 building belonged to the former noble convent for women next to the Stiftskirche, is owned by the town and today also houses meeting rooms of the town council.
The exhibition on the upper floor offers a cross-section of Fröndenberg's history from the Middle Ages to the present and shows life, housing and work in the town. Documents, pictures and records from club, church and private life as well as mementos of the World Wars, inflation and reconstruction round out the collection. Changing exhibitions are devoted to individual events, families or businesses of the town.
