Westfälisches Kettenschmiedemuseum
Volunteer-run industrial museum in the Himmelmannpark in Fröndenberg on chain making – with blacksmithing demonstrations and weddings by the fire.
About the museum
Chain making has a long tradition in the Märkisches Sauerland; in Fröndenberg it became a defining industry from the late 19th century, in which factory work and home work long existed side by side. Toward the end of the 20th century the industry largely disappeared from the town.
To preserve this history, volunteers gathered machines from dissolved chain factories and restored them. After a three-year setup period, the museum opened in May 1999 in a former storage building of the Himmelmann paper factory, which closed in 1982, right next to the listed "Fröndenberger Trichter".
The exhibition shows the development from the hand-forged chain link to machine production – from drop hammers around 1900 to electric welding machines of the 1920s to 1950s. A forge fire from around 1910 is rekindled during demonstrations. Since September 1999, civil wedding ceremonies have also been held in the machine hall; by mid-2026 around 900 couples had said "I do" there. The museum is run by the Förderverein Kulturzentrum Fröndenberg/Ruhr (friends' association), which also includes the event space Kulturschmiede.
