About the museum
The Heimatmuseum Holzkirchhausen has existed since 1988. In 2009 the Museumsverein Holzkirchhausen (museum association) was founded, and it has cared for the building ever since. Between 2010 and 2014 it converted the "alte Kinderschule" (old children's school), a municipal building from 1875, into the new museum.
The building was used earlier as a shepherd's or poorhouse, was converted into a children's nursery in the 1930s, and at the same time housed a public bathhouse. The bathhouse was closed in the 1950s and left unchanged; the showers, the bathtub and the original fittings are now part of the exhibition.
On more than 250 square meters, the museum shows rural life in the village with house, farm and field tools from three centuries, as well as tools of the shoemaker, cooper, wheelwright, blacksmith and stonemason, who mostly worked part-time in Holzkirchhausen. Highlights include a 19th-century women's costume, a veterans' association banner, and prehistoric finds such as hand axes, pottery and bronze jewelry.
