About the museum

The Möhringen local history museum goes back to a citizens' initiative in the 1930s; its collection grew mainly through private donations and collecting. It was housed in the Spitalhof, an estate that had belonged to Esslingen's Katharinenhospital since the 15th century. After Möhringen was incorporated into Stuttgart in 1942, the municipal cultural office took over the museum.

Badly damaged in World War II, the Spitalhof was demolished in 1959 and rebuilt in a modified form. Since 1962 the museum has displayed its holdings in the new building, which it shares with the district library and the music school. The Spitaltor gate, built in 1589, has survived and is now regarded as the landmark of the complex.

The exhibition ranges from prehistoric and early historic finds to views of the village and documents on families, clubs, and the municipality, as well as objects from farming, textile production, and local industry. The museum is part of the museum family of the StadtPalais – Museum für Stuttgart and is looked after by volunteers from the Initiative Lebensraum Möhringen, Fasanenhof, Sonnenberg, who also organize guided tours and changing special exhibitions.
