About the museum
The museum was prompted by a visit of Mähringen's school principal Alfred Knödler to the Langenau local history museum in 1968. He began collecting old objects, which were initially stored in a room at the school. Since 1978, the Mähringen local chapter of the Swabian Alb Association has used what is probably the oldest house in the village as a museum.
The building was erected around 1770 as a Seldnerhaus (a small farmhouse) and remained largely unchanged for decades. It contains the last surviving Webdunk in the village, a work room beneath the parlor. The displays include the kitchen, living room and bedroom with a canopy bed and bed shears, as well as objects from farm, craft and household life. The barn holds agricultural equipment from the first half of the 20th century.
