Temporary location (expected until 2029). The main building at Marktplatz 9 has been closed for conversion and renovation since April 2023. Until October 4, 2026, the Lion Man is on view as a guest at the kunsthalle weishaupt; the HfG-Archiv remains open. From January 16 to June 6, 2027, the archaeology exhibition opens in the renovated Ehinger Stadel; the full reopening is planned for the end of 2029.
The HfG-Archiv shows the corporate identities of West German companies and institutions after 1945, such as the Lufthansa design by the HfG group around Otl Aicher, and compares them with work by other designers.
New archaeological collection presentation in the renovated Ehinger Stadel on the Marktplatz, centered on the Lion Man; because of subsequent construction work, initially open only until June 2027.
About the museum
The city of Ulm established its museum in 1924 as a scholarly run institution; its core consisted of the holdings assembled since the 19th century by the Ulmer Verein für Kunst und Altertum (Ulm Society for Art and Antiquities). Founding director Julius Baum reorganized the collections and at the same time built up a remarkable collection of modern art, much of which was confiscated and destroyed in 1937 during the Nazi “Degenerate Art” campaign.
The museum occupies a complex of several historic buildings on the Marktplatz, including the Kiechelhaus. An extension was added in 1999 to house the collection of Ulm art lover Kurt Fried, with several hundred works of post-1945 art. Other focal points are late Gothic painting and sculpture of the Ulm School, decorative arts, and the history of the city.
The most famous object is the roughly 40,000-year-old Lion Man carved from mammoth ivory, found in 1939 in the Hohlenstein-Stadel cave in the Lone Valley and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ice Age art in the Swabian Jura. The museum also includes the HfG-Archiv in the former building of the Hochschule für Gestaltung (Ulm School of Design) on the Kuhberg and, since 2026, the Naturmuseum Ulm.
The main building has been closed for comprehensive renovation since April 2023; in the meantime, the museum is showing exhibitions in the neighboring kunsthalle weishaupt. From January 2027, the new archaeology presentation in the renovated Ehinger Stadel will be temporarily accessible; the full reopening is planned for the end of 2029.
