About the museum

The Obernfeld local history museum goes back to the collecting passion of head teacher Franz Kurth, who from 1937 onward rescued old farm and household tools from the village and gathered them with his pupils. The first objects were shown publicly at the anniversary parades of 1961 and 1971; afterwards they were stored in the school cellar.

In 1983 the municipal council decided to fit out former teachers' apartments in the community hall on Kirchgasse as exhibition rooms. A historian catalogued the holdings scientifically and built up the museum on a professional concept; it officially opened on June 27, 1986, for the village's 800th anniversary. Because space ran short, a new building was erected on Kirchgasse and dedicated in 1991; the exhibition in the new house opened in September 1992.

Across about 500 square meters, the museum shows rural life around 1900 with old photographs, a large textile section, historic clothing and traditional costumes, and a small sacred section. Furnished rooms such as a kitchen with a sausage larder, a parlor, a bedroom and a shoemaker's workshop complement the display, which is considered the largest of its kind in southern Lower Saxony. Volunteers from the friends' association, founded in 1992, look after the house.
