About the museum
The Heimatmuseum Schnaittach was founded in 1923 by citizens of Schnaittach, including Gottfried Stammler, whose collection formed the foundation. It began at Marktplatz 14, moved in 1929 to the former Kolonnenhaus in Grabenstraße and around 1938 to the cantor's and rabbi's house of the former synagogue in Museumsgasse. After the November pogroms of 1938, Stammler had set up a local history museum there on behalf of the community; it opened on April 30, 1949.
Due to renovation work the building was closed from 1987 to 1998 and then reopened with a new concept. Since 1998 the Museums- und Geschichtsverein Schnaittach e.V. (museum and history association) has supported the museum with special exhibitions, guided tours and events. The Jüdisches Museum Franken (Jewish Museum Franconia) is also located in the same building complex today.
The museum displays a significant collection of historical Christmas tree decorations from 1870 to the present, including Gablonz costume jewelry as well as tin, cotton-wool and tinsel ornaments. Other themes include home life, tableware, containers ranging from pill boxes to indoor commodes, popular piety, and the culture and history of the Rothenberg lordship, a Catholic exclave in the Nürnberger Land that has belonged to Bavaria since 1698.
