About the museum

The Jewish Museum Franconia in Schnaittach belongs to the sponsoring association, which also runs the sites in Fürth and Schwabach. It is housed in an ensemble of Jewish religious buildings: the synagogue built in 1570, the adjoining rabbi's and cantor's house, and the historic ritual bath in the cellar. The men's prayer hall (Männerschul) was built in 1570 on the model of the Pinkas Synagogue in Prague; in 1735/36 it was extended to the east and supplemented by a women's prayer hall (Frauenschul) on the same level, an arrangement unique in Germany. The two prayer halls are connected by openings in the wall but have separate entrances.

According to the museum, the permanent exhibition shows the most important collection of material evidence of Jewish rural culture in southern Germany: ritual objects as well as everyday objects from the former Jewish rural community "Medinat Aschfah", a network of the Jewish communities in Ottensoos, Schnaittach, Forth and Hüttenbach. The mikveh in the cellar of the rabbi's house is fed by groundwater. The same building also houses the Heimatmuseum Schnaittach, which complements the history of the town. Students of the Mittelschule Schnaittach have developed audio stories about central places and objects.
