About the museum
The Heimatmuseum Stadtsteinach goes back to the initiative of Anton Nagel, who had been committed to the history of his hometown since his youth. It began in 1979 in a shed of the former Klöthe bicycle workshop; four years later it moved to the old schoolhouse at the Knoll property. Since 1989 it has been located in the former Sammethaus on Kulmbacher Straße, below the town parish church of St. Michael. This 17th-century half-timbered building formerly served as a gatehouse, because the gatekeeper of the adjoining town gate lived there. Nagel received the town's citizens' medal in 1985 and died in 1999.
Across 13 rooms with 250 square meters of exhibition space, the house shows tools of craftsmen such as shoemakers, tailors, tanners, saddlers, carpenters and joiners, as well as agricultural and forestry tools and machines. Other areas are devoted to popular piety, the history of the town, church and school history, and a natural history collection.
For school classes the museum is connected to the MUSbi platform, through which teachers in Upper Franconia can book museum education programs.
