About the museum
The Heimatverein Varel acquired the property at Neumarktplatz 3 in 1952 and opened the local history museum to the public there in 1954. After an extension in 1967 and further alterations, the building has been used as a restaurant since 1971; the restaurant still preserves the Bentinck Room, a fireplace room with kitchen furnishings from the mid-18th century, and the Aldenburg or Frisian Room.
In 2003 the museum moved into the new building at Neumarktplatz 3a. The exhibition space was expanded by purchasing the house at Neumarktplatz 5. After a comprehensive redesign it reopened in September 2024 as the "Museum Varel". It is run by the Heimatverein Varel e. V., which also looks after the Mill Museum in Varel.
