Heimatmuseum Verrückte Schule
Local history museum in the old school of Cabarz, moved back by a good four meters in 1899 – on local history, spa tradition and Tabarz traditional costume.
About the museum
The half-timbered house on what is now Inselsbergstraße was built in 1784 as a school on what was then Marktweg in the Cabarz district. The classrooms were on the ground floor, and the teacher lived above. A good hundred years later there was no longer enough space, and the school authority approved a new building next to the old house only on the condition that the old one move back to widen the road.
In early October 1899, construction workers pushed the building about 4.20 meters back using beams and threaded spindles – whereupon the locals christened it the "Verrückte Schule" (Moved School, a pun on "crazy school"). It then served as a residence for two teacher families, and from the 1920s the municipal administration moved into the ground floor.
From 2001 to 2004 the house was comprehensively renovated. In 2005 the local Kneipp association set up the local history museum on the upper floor, which it has looked after on a volunteer basis ever since. On view are, among other things, a parlor, a shoemaker's workshop, kitchen utensils and memorabilia of the opera singer Max Alvary and the resistance fighter Theodor Neubauer; since 2011 a crank-operated model has illustrated the moving of the building. The beginnings of tourism in Tabarz and Cabarz are also a topic.
On the ground floor, the costume association presents the Tabarz traditional costume exhibition. Its showpiece is the Tabarz apron costume (Schurztracht), which was chosen Costume of the Year in 2019.
