Heimatmuseum Finsterbergen
Local history museum in an 18th-century carter's house in Finsterbergen with traditional costumes, embroidery, musical instruments, and a doll maker's workshop.
About the museum
The local history museum is housed in a listed 18th-century carter's house in the center of Finsterbergen, which is now part of the town of Friedrichroda. It traces the development of the village, which was once shaped by a monastery, later by the carting trade and doll making, and finally became a climatic health resort in the Thuringian Forest.
The tour begins in a furnished living area with a farmhouse kitchen, alcove, and parlor. Further rooms are devoted to the everyday life and working world of the carters as well as the former cultivation of woad. Also on display are original Finsterbergen costumes, valuable embroidery, old musical instruments such as the Thuringian Waldzither, and tools for processing flax. The exhibition thus spans the period from the carters' era to Finsterbergen's rise as a health resort.
On the upper floor, the visit ends in a reconstructed doll maker's workshop, where papier-mâché products are also shown. The house is operated by the Stadtbetriebe Friedrichroda, a municipal enterprise of the town that also runs the Heimatmuseum in Friedrichroda and the Marienglashöhle.
