About the museum

The building on Wennigser Straße was constructed in 1886 as Bredenbeck's new village school, after the one-room “Alte Schule” An der Beeke had become too small. At first it had only two classrooms; some twenty years later a second floor with the same layout was added, and three teachers' apartments were created in the left part of the building.

Since 1973 the Bredenbeck Heimatstube has been housed in the former teacher's apartment on the first floor. It shows an extensive collection of pictures documenting the village's development, as well as tools and other evidence of village crafts. One focus is products of the glass industry in the district of Steinkrug, which produced until 1928. Coal mining, lime burning, and the sandstone quarries also brought the village an industrial boom over roughly a hundred years.

A separate section documents, in writing and pictures, the life of the writer Adolph Freiherr Knigge, born in Bredenbeck in 1752, whose book “Über den Umgang mit Menschen” (1788) was translated into several languages. The Knigge family has been established at the Bredenbeck manor estate since 1312. The Heimatstube is looked after by the Heimat- und Kulturverein Bredenbeck.
