About the museum
When the Hauptschule Immendorf was merged with the Hauptschule Geilenkirchen in 1988, the Catholic primary school and the kindergarten moved into the vacated building on Ringstraße. At the initiative of Karl-Heinz Gast from the city administration and Immendorf teacher Peter Kück, the City of Geilenkirchen made a classroom available for a "Historisches Klassenzimmer" (Historic Classroom).
There they first collected everything the school had sorted out when it moved: old school desks and benches, maps, outdated technical devices, school books and teaching materials. Over the years the collection grew with further exhibits from school life. In November 1992 the association "Historisches Klassenzimmer e.V." was founded; around 200 members, friends and sponsors remain loyal to it.
The museum shows how school was organized in the countryside about 120 years ago: one-room elementary schools in the imperial era, large classes in cramped rooms, and teachers who had a hard time of it. In a historical lesson, groups can learn about the rules, discipline and punishments of the time and try their hand at Sütterlin script.
