About the museum
The Hiwwelhaus, known in dialect as the "Haus auf dem Hügel" (house on the hill), was built in 1711/12 and is considered the oldest farmhouse in Saarland preserved in its original state. As a southwest German Einhaus (single-house type), it combines living quarters, stable and farm rooms under one roof and shows typical building forms and furnishings of rural life in the 17th and 18th centuries.
Between 1995 and 1998 the municipality of Marpingen carefully restored the building. In 1998 the multipurpose room opened and the Hiwwelhaus association was founded. Five years later, on Open Monument Day 2003, the restored historic living section opened to the public as a small museum.
In the living area, period furnishings give visitors an impression of life on a farm of that era. In the former stable, a modern multipurpose hall was created, hosting cultural events, exhibitions and seminars; it can also be used for civil wedding ceremonies.
