Hüttenberger Heimatmuseum
The region's oldest local history museum, in the old town hall of Leihgestern, featuring rural working life and traditional Hüttenberg costumes.
About the museum
The museum goes back to Georg Heß, a local poet from Leihgestern. He campaigned to turn the dilapidated old town hall of 1772 into a museum, collected donations of money and objects, and, as a trained painter and decorator, worked on the conversion himself for months; local craft businesses provided workers free of charge. On July 20, 1952, the building was inaugurated with a festive procession, and at the beginning of 1953 Heß handed it over to the municipality. It is considered the oldest local history museum in the region.
The aim was to preserve the rural culture of the Hessian Hüttenberg area. Some 500 objects from across the Hüttenberg region show farming tools under the motto “Von der Saat zur Ernte” (From Sowing to Harvest), household goods, cast-iron stove plates, a farmhouse parlor and, on the second floor, a loom, flax-processing tools and life-size figures in working, festive and mourning costumes.
In 1986/87 the building was renovated inside and out; in the 1990s a Heimatstube (local heritage room) was added across the street, followed by another exterior renovation in 2005. Today the museum belongs to the town of Linden and is supported by a friends' association, which also initiated the digitization of the collection.
