Schloss Falkenlust

Small Rococo hunting lodge by François de Cuvilliés near Brühl, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with a mirror cabinet, lacquer cabinet and hermit's chapel.

Opening hoursAdmission €8

About the museum

Falkenlust Palace was built between 1729 and 1737 by François de Cuvilliés for the Elector and Archbishop of Cologne, Clemens August. It is the last surviving palace designed expressly for falconry. The small palace stands in the Falkenluster Busch, where gray herons flew past on their way from their nests to the feeding grounds by the Rhine; they were hunted with trained falcons, ringed and released again.

After the hunt the court retreated to the intimate palace for supper and games. Its interiors rank among the most precious creations of German Rococo, including a Chinese lacquer cabinet, a gilded mirror cabinet and a staircase with Dutch tiles.

As early as 1730, a chapel dedicated to Saint Mary of Egypt was built right next to the palace, where Clemens August could withdraw to pray. Pierre Laporterie designed it as a hermit's grotto with shells and crystals. Falkenlust Palace, together with Augustusburg Palace, forms the UNESCO World Heritage Site in Brühl and today is used as a museum.
