About the museum
The Museum für Alltagsgeschichte was founded in 1995 as a counterpart to the electoral pleasure palace Schloss Augustusburg. While the palace symbolizes the "eternal Sunday" of history, which only a thin upper class enjoyed, the museum focuses on the people of Brühl, who hauled the stones for the palace but were not allowed to take part in the celebrations.
The museum is housed in a half-timbered house from 1744 in Brühl's old town, which is also significant for historic building research. With support from the Kulturstiftung des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen, the building was restored to its original condition. The extensive cultural and social history collection of Günter Krüger, who was artistic director of the museum and of the Brühl Ceramics Museum until his death in 2009, has found its home here.
The sponsor is the Brühler Museumsgesellschaft e.V., which also runs the neighboring Brühl Ceramics Museum on the "Brühl Museum Island." Besides the collection, there are changing exhibitions, for example on lignite, nativity scenes, or Brühl in the postwar years.
