About the museum
The poet Jean Paul, whose real name was Johann Paul Friedrich Richter, moved to Bayreuth with his wife Karoline in August 1804. On the way to the Eremitage he soon discovered the inn run by the Rollwenzel couple outside the city gates and became a regular guest there. The landlords set up a room of their own for him, where from about 1805 until his death in November 1825 he sat and wrote almost daily. The simple poet's room, with its wide view over meadows and fields to the Rauer Kulm, has been preserved to this day and is considered one of the smallest museums in Germany.
The house on Königsallee was originally a turnpike and customs house and received the official right to serve drinks in 1809; since 1876 it has remained in the same family's ownership in a direct line. The association for the preservation of Jean Paul's inn and poet's room, founded in 2006, has been collecting donations since 2007 to restore the room and its furnishings, and keeps the poet's memory alive with readings. The family, who live in the house, open the room to registered visitors.
