About the museum
The museum goes back to the Bayreuth benefactor Dr. Philipp Hausser. From his youth he had built up an important private collection on Jean Paul: manuscripts, first editions, literature from the poet's circle, portraits and pictorial material. This made it possible for a Jean Paul Museum to be set up in 1980, whose first director was Dr. Manfred Eger. The poet Jean Paul (Johann Paul Friedrich Richter) lived in Bayreuth from 1804 until his death in 1825.
The city of Bayreuth significantly expanded the house in 1994 and has since acquired further valuable manuscripts and documents on the poet's life and work. For the poet's 250th birthday, the museum was redesigned and rebuilt in 2013 under the direction of Dr. Sven Friedrich.
The museum is housed in the former home of Richard Wagner's daughter Eva and her husband Houston Stewart Chamberlain, who helped shape the völkisch (ethnic-nationalist) view of Wagner. That the humane spirit of Jean Paul is at home here today is understood by the museum as a symbolic rescue of his ideals, since Nazi ideology deliberately misunderstood the poet and misused him for its propaganda.
