About the museum

The church was built from 1619 to 1621 together with a college, after the Archbishop of Mainz had brought the Jesuits to Aschaffenburg in 1612. After the order was dissolved in 1773 and the city passed to Bavaria, the municipal schools were consolidated on the site from 1817/18 onward; the last Jesuits did not leave Aschaffenburg until the late 1940s.

The building was badly damaged in World War II and repaired afterward. In 1971 the city acquired the site, which housed, among other things, a state vocational upper secondary school (Fachoberschule).

Since 1976 the deconsecrated church interior with its rich stucco decoration has served as a venue for art exhibitions, and since 1990 it has been the official exhibition venue of the city of Aschaffenburg. The program focuses on classical modernism and established positions in contemporary art, usually with two major temporary exhibitions a year. There is no permanent exhibition; in addition, a small special cabinet and, since 2025, a glass pavilion in the courtyard are used for presentations. In 2026 the venue celebrates its 50th anniversary as an exhibition space. A combined ticket is available with the Christian Schad Museum.
