Joachim-Ringelnatz-Museum
Museum in Cuxhaven on the life and work of Joachim Ringelnatz – poet, sailor, and painter – with paintings, watercolors, manuscripts, and photos.
About the museum
Joachim Ringelnatz, born Hans Bötticher in 1883, was stationed in Cuxhaven as a naval soldier in the First World War. The impetus for the museum was the exhibition "Ringelnatz! Ein Dichter malt seine Welt", developed at the University of Göttingen, which was shown in 2000/01 in Göttingen, Cuxhaven, and Wurzen and brought the long-forgotten painter Ringelnatz back into view. In summer 2001 the non-profit Joachim-Ringelnatz-Stiftung was founded in Cuxhaven, which looks after and makes accessible the artistic estate.
Since November 2002 the foundation has presented the work permanently in a historic half-timbered house on Südersteinstraße, directly opposite Schloss Ritzebüttel. The building is provided by the city of Cuxhaven; operations are financed by admission, shop sales, donations, and foundation funds, supported by the Ringelnatz-Gesellschaft founded in 2004. The board and foundation council work on a voluntary basis.
The exhibition combines paintings, drawings, and watercolors with volumes of poetry, prose, photographs, letters, and documents, and also sheds light on contemporary history up to the artist's ostracism under National Socialism. In 2019 the donation of the Gescher-Ringelnatz collection considerably expanded the holdings. Annually changing special exhibitions take up individual aspects of the work and the era; in addition, a Ringelnatz exhibition can be seen in the neighboring Schloss Ritzebüttel.
