Kaffeemühlenmuseum Wiernsheim
More than 1,000 historic coffee grinders from three centuries in the baroque rectory of Wiernsheim, with a museum café and herb garden.
About the museum
The foundation of the museum is the collection of the Wiernsheim entrepreneur and honorary citizen Rolf Scheuermann, whose company operates beverage and coffee vending machines. His collecting passion began in the 1970s with a grinder from a flea market; over time around 1,000 coffee grinders from all over the world came together, the oldest from 1720. In 2008 he donated the collection to the municipality of Wiernsheim.
In the same year the municipality acquired the listed former Protestant rectory on the market square, whose construction is dated by dendrochronology to 1711. With funding from the state and federal governments it was converted and opened in September 2011 as a coffee grinder museum; in the attic the municipality also set up a wedding room.
The exhibition on three floors arranges the grinders by construction types and themes: early hand and travel grinders, table and lap grinders, bridal and wedding grinders, grinders with hunting, war, or religious motifs, curious individual pieces, and large commercial wall grinders. Many pieces show that coffee grinders were decorative showpieces of the applied arts in noble and bourgeois households. The museum includes a café, an herb garden, and a shop; an audio guide has been available since 2022.
