About the museum

The Munich painter Friedrich August von Kaulbach (1850–1920) had a country villa built in 1893 in Ohlstadt to his own design in the country house style, with a studio and a large garden. Until 1910 he used it as a second home in summer, and afterwards as his main residence until his death. In the municipality, other well-known artists and writers also lived and worked at times.

Since July 1997 the house has been accessible as a museum. It shows Kaulbach's artistic estate with just under 300 paintings and oil sketches, around 1,000 drawings, and numerous sketchbooks, photographs and autochromes. Of the historic living rooms, the studio and a small study in the attic have been preserved in their original condition, where the painter liked to withdraw.

The studio displays about 30 paintings and 25 drawings by Kaulbach, as well as works by Franz von Lenbach and Olaf Gulbransson. Original furniture and paintings convey how a successful painter of the late 19th century worked and lived. The museum is located on the grounds of the Ohlstadtklinik.
