About the museum
The Heimatverein Kostheim e. V. was founded in 1974 and wanted from the start to show the history of the village in a museum. In 1976, a first local history museum was set up in the basement of the Bürgerhaus; on April 30, 1995, it moved into the former Alte Ortsverwaltung (old local administration building). The building was erected in 1837 by the Hofmann family and was restored in 2010 by the Gemeinnützige Wiesbadener Wohnbaugesellschaft.
Only pieces from the Kostheim municipal area are shown. One focus is finds from the Celtic and Roman periods in the Roman room, including shards, jugs, and urn burials, as well as a fortification pillar of the Roman bridge. The flags room presents the long-established clubs of the village, and the raftsmen's room shows the life of the Main raftsmen, whose trade gave rise to seven sawmills in Kostheim.
Further rooms are devoted to the church of St. Kilian and local artists, earlier year groups, the fire brigade and schools, a Kostheim kitchen, winemaking, and an old shoemaker's workshop. An attached sculpture room shows, in a permanent exhibition, works by the blind sculptor Jakob Schmitt and the Pallottine priest Franz-Josef Ludwig.
