About the museum
In 1983 the Gesellschaft für Heimatgeschichte Kastel (Society for Local History of Kastel) came up with the idea of preserving the more than 2000-year-old history of the town. As a first step, a "Historical Kastel Room" was set up in the Reduit and opened on July 7, 1984. As more and more archaeological finds from Kastel's soil accumulated, the room soon proved too small.
With support from the state capitals of Mainz and Wiesbaden and numerous companies and citizens, the Museum Castellum was then established in the rooms of the Reduit, built in 1832. It opened on May 19, 1990, for Kastel's 2000th anniversary celebration, with more than 1200 guests.
Today the society shows a wide selection of objects there, from uniforms and models to militaria and everyday items. Besides the Museum Castellum, it looks after the Museum Römischer Ehrenbogen (Roman honorary arch museum), the Flößerzimmer (raftsmen's room) and the Erbenheimer Warte (Erbenheim watchtower). In the Electors' Room of the house, civil weddings are also held.
