Works from two private collections that are otherwise rarely seen in public: Danish artists and members of the Ekensund artists' colony, as well as pop artists such as Andy Warhol and David Hockney.
About the museum
The Künstlermuseum Heikendorf-Kieler Förde opened in September 2000 in the restored home of the painter Heinrich Blunck. The studio house was built in 1865 as the first brick building in the village; in 1923, Blunck and his wife Käte moved in, and in 1928 they added a two-story studio annex. After the death of the couple, the state of Schleswig-Holstein approved the Heinrich-Blunck-Stiftung (foundation) in 1995, which preserves the estate and the buildings and supports the museum.
The exhibition includes works of the Heikendorf artists' colony, which, besides Blunck, included among others Georg Burmester, Rudolf Behrend, Werner Lange, Oskar Droege and the sculptor Karin Hertz. It shows the development of painting from North German Impressionism to late Expressionism; landscape, sea and light shape many of the works.
The exhibition spaces were expanded in 2013 and 2016, most recently with funds from the EU and the state. Several temporary exhibitions with regional and European artists take place every year. In 2014 the house received the quality seal “Zertifiziertes Museum”, which was renewed in 2019 and 2025. The family's former fruit, vegetable and flower garden was converted into a museum garden with sculptures by Karin Hertz.
