A cultural-history journey from antiquity to the present showing how societies have dealt with sex work and what this reveals about power, morality and images of women. Sex workers appear not only as subjects but also as actors and artists in their own right.
Freely accessible, hands-on artworks outdoors and on the roof, including Jeppe Hein's water pavilion, Carsten Höller's slide and Olafur Eliasson's LEGO city.
Walk-in media installation in the media art room where visitors can explore more than 50 sustainability projects on large touch walls according to their own interests.
The exhibition asks how the memory of Nazi crimes can stay alive once the eyewitnesses are gone and presents artistic, media and historical forms of remembrance work. Created together with the Stiftung Gedenkstätten Buchenwald und Mittelbau-Dora.
Major survey featuring works by 76 women artists from Latin America – from Frida Kahlo and Leonora Carrington to rediscovered and young artists – in cooperation with museums in Basel, Espoo and Brussels.
About the museum
The idea of a national art hall in the federal capital emerged as early as 1949, when artists in Bonn discussed such a venue. After decades of debate over location, funding and purpose, Chancellor Helmut Kohl laid the foundation stone in October 1989; the building opened on June 17, 1992. It is run by a non-profit company in which the federal government and all 16 states are shareholders.
The Viennese architect Gustav Peichl designed a square building with a striking row of columns on the street side, symbolizing the 16 federal states, and three blue-tiled cones of light on the planted roof. The hall has no collection of its own; from the outset it was designed exclusively for temporary exhibitions and events – a new model at the time with no direct precedent.
The program ranges from old and modern art to archaeology and cultural history, natural science and environmental topics. The series "Die Großen Sammlungen" (The Great Collections) presented more than 30 major museums from around the world; large shows have been devoted to Max Liebermann, Kazimir Malevich and the art of Gandhara, among others. In addition, there are theater, dance, music and discussion formats in the Forum, and in summer freely accessible, interactive artworks on the roof and the forecourt. Eva Kraus has headed the institution as artistic director since 2020.
