About the museum

The Kunsthalle is run by the Hypo-Kulturstiftung, which the then Bayerische Hypotheken- und Wechsel-Bank established in 1983 on its 150th anniversary. Two years later, on June 14, 1985, the Kunsthalle opened as a pure exhibition venue without a collection of its own. HypoVereinsbank, now part of UniCredit, has supported the foundation and the venue to this day.

Since 2001 the Kunsthalle has been located in the Fünf Höfe between Theatinerstraße and Kardinal-Faulhaber-Straße, a commercial and residential quarter in the old town designed by Herzog & de Meuron. About 1,200 square meters of exhibition space on the third floor are technically equipped for valuable loans.

Each year the venue presents three major exhibitions that alternate between monographic shows and cultural history themes and include painting, sculpture, photography, design and fashion. They are often created in cooperation with international museums. The founding director Peter Ade was succeeded by Johann Georg Prinz von Hohenzollern and Christiane Lange; since 2013 Roger Diederen has headed the venue, which by now calls itself simply "Kunsthalle München."
