About the museum

The Literaturhaus München is housed in a former school building on Salvatorplatz in the old town. The city council had the building constructed in the Neo-Renaissance style in 1886/87 and integrated the market that had been held there into the ground floor, while classes were taught on the floors above. The market ended in 1906, and in 1925 the first girls' secondary school in Bavaria moved in. A bomb hit damaged the top floor in 1944; afterward the building long served as temporary quarters for schools and other users.

In 1993 the city council decided to convert the building, which was in need of renovation, into the Literaturhaus. For this the city, together with publishers, founded the Stiftung Buch-, Medien- und Literaturhaus München. The firm Kiessler + Partner renovated the building from 1995 to 1997 and topped it with a glazed steel structure with a view over the rooftops; the conversion received the BDA Prize. In June 1997 the Literaturhaus opened under the direction of Reinhard G. Wittmann; since 2016 it has been led by Tanja Graf.

In addition to about 220 readings, debates and seminars a year, the house uses the large gallery on the ground floor for changing literature exhibitions that make texts, authors or forms of storytelling spatially tangible – most recently, for example, on Tove Jansson and her Moomins. On the first weekend of Advent, independent publishers have also presented themselves since 2006 at the market "Andere Bücher."
