About the museum
The Kunsthalle is housed in one of the oldest savings bank buildings in Leipzig. The Sparkasse acquired the building in 1914; it remained its head office until expropriation in 1950 and returned to its ownership in 1994. After extensive renovation, the exhibition space was created in the 1924 annex directly on the bank of the Pleißemühlgraben.
The Kunsthalle opened in February 2001 for the 175th anniversary of the Sparkasse Leipzig with the show "blick in die sammlung/1". Since then there have been more than 40 exhibitions, which alongside the institution's own holdings also presented thematic shows on the development of Leipzig art. After a longer closure, the house reopened in March 2026 with the collection exhibition "Im Angesicht der Zeiten" (In the Face of the Ages), which explores the human figure in Leipzig art since the 1950s.
The basis is the art collection of the Sparkasse Leipzig, which has been built up for more than 30 years with the aim of promoting, preserving and documenting the region's artistic output. With around 5,000 works – painting, prints, drawing, photography and sculpture – it is, according to the institution, the largest systematic collection of 20th-century Leipzig art. Since the reopening, regular exhibitions have put the collection in conversation with current artistic positions; talk and performance formats on art and society as well as inclusive outreach programmes complement the classic guided tours.
